Available Comp Size: 350 x 247 ![]() Caption: LENTICULAR CLOUD OVER MOUNT RAINIER.
Location: Eatonville, Washington Copyright: © Ronald G. Warfield Photographer Code: MORA - 679 AGPix ID: AGPix_warfield_0006 Photo Alignment: 35mm (horizontal) Comments: At 14,411 foot elevation, Mount Rainier makes its own weather. Moisture in approaching storms rises to pass over the Mountain. The moisture condenses into a cloud on the windward side of the Mountain and evaporates on the leeward side. The cloud remains stationary as the winds blow through it. Dry air layers leave gaps in the cloud, giving a stacked pancake appearance to the cloud mass. I observed the development of this altocumulus stacked lenticular cloud over Mount Rainier National Park for over 9 hours on February 15, 1997.
