Nauvoo, from the Hebrew word meaning beautiful, became home to the Mormons and at one time was the tenth largest city in the U.S. Joseph Smith was assassinated in 1846 and a little later the Mormons were forced to leave the city. The Mormon temple has been rebuilt.
