Comments: The Mormons, led by Joseph Smith, came to Nauvoo in 1839. Nauvoo, from the Hebrew word meaning beautiful, became home to the Mormons and at one time was the tenth largest city in the U.S. Joseph Smith was assassinated in 1846 and a little later the Mormons were forced to leave the city. The Mormon temple has been rebuilt.
