Comments: The old Bahia Honda bridge was built on top of Flagler's 1912 railway line which was often referred to as Flagler's Folly. Florida Keys. Bahia Honda, meaning deep bay, in Spanish, is an island in the lower Florida Keys. U.S. 1 (the Overseas Highway) crosses the key at approximately mile markers 36-38.5, between Ohio Key and Spanish Harbor Key 12 miles (19 km) west of Marathon, close to the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge. The island is virtually uninhabited, being home to the 524-acre (2.12 km2) Bahia Honda State Park. Founded in 1961, the park occupies most of the island. The channel at the island's west end is one of the deepest natural channels in the Florida Keys. The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail is a 106-mile (171 km), paved rail trail in development in the Florida Keys. The completed trail will connect Key Largo to Key West, allowing travel through the Keys separate from U.S. Highway 1. It has been made part of the East Coast Greenway, a 3000-mile system of trails connecting Maine to Florida, forming its southernmost portion. The trail incorporates most of the railbed of the former Overseas Railroad built by the Florida East Coast Railway. Rail service began in 1911; the effects of the 1935 Labor Day hurricane ended service that year. The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail was designated a National Recreation Trail in 2004.
