The red-eyed tree frog is an arboreal hylid native to Neotropical rainforests in Central America. They have three eyelids, and sticky pads on their toes. Phyllomedusid tree frogs are arboreal animals, meaning they spend a majority of their lives in trees; they are excellent jumpers. Hunting only at night Red-eyed tree frogs are insectivorous that eat crickets, moths, flies, and other insects, with tadpoles, fruit flies and pinhead crickets the meals of choice. This species is threatened by habitat loss by the destruction of natural forests although it is known to survive in places with a degree of anthropogenic alteration. It is also recorded within the pet trade. It is protected by many parks throughout its range. It is listed on CITES Appendix II.
