Io Moth (Automeris io) North American saturniid moth found from southern Canada to Florida and New Mexico. The eggs are laid in clusters of twenty or more. Orange or brown first instar larvae emerge and eat their egg shell soon after hatching. The caterpillars are gregarious in all instars, and have urticating spines with a sting similar to that of stinging nettle, but longer lasting.
