Caption: Wisdom, a banded Laysan albatross thought to be at least 60 years old, strides around the area where her nest is located after having returned from fishing at sea on the evening of March 20, 2011. This is the first time she has been photographed at the nest since the March 10 tsunami. Initially banded in 1956, Wisdom has probably flown more than 3 million miles. She is the oldest wild bird known through 90 years of banding records.

This Laysan albatross chick was washed from its nest by the March 10 tsunami and entangled in human-caused trash, including bits of fishing net and ropes. Volunteers rescued several hundred stranded chicks such as this one. They have a good chance of survival if their parents can find them when they return from feeding at sea.

Surviving Laysan albatross adults and chicks in a tsunami overwash area on Sand Island, three weeks after March 10 tsunami. Although adult albatrosses returned from sea to find and feed some of their chicks, about 50% of the year's chicks at this nest site were lost to injury from overwash or subsequent starvation.
