They breed in shallow water but wander far from lakes or streams into moist wooded areas. Breed in late winter to early spring. Often call before ice has melted, a hoarse, duck-like clacking. Explosive breeders, with all eggs laid in a few days. Range farther north than any other North American frog, into Labrador and Alaska. Found south into the Appalachian Mountains.
