Comments: Wood frogs are distinguished by dark markings behind the eyes. They breed in shallow water but wander far from lakes or streams into moist wooded areas. Breed in late winter to early spring. Often call before ice has melted, a hoarse, duck-like clacking. Explosive breeders, with all eggs laid in a few days. Range farther north than any other North American frog, into Labrador and Alaska. Found south into the Appalachian Mountains.
