This Laysan albatross chick was washed from its nest by the March 10 tsunami and entangled in human-caused trash, including bits of fishing net and ropes. Volunteers rescued several hundred stranded chicks such as this one. They have a good chance of survival if their parents can find them when they return from feeding at sea.

Laysan albatross chicks and a few sub-adults rest near drift piles of organic debris and human-caused trash washed up by the March 10 tsunami. Albatross chicks dug free of the overwash debris will wait for the return from sea of their parents in order to be fed.
