South American tapir, Tapirus terrestris, flehmen, flehmening, flehmen response flehmen position, flehmen reaction, flehming, is a behavior in which an animal curls back its upper lip exposing its front teeth, inhales with the nostrils usually closed and then often holds this position for several seconds. It may be performed over a site or substance of particular interest to the animal (e.g. urine, faeces or nearby animal in heat) or may be performed with the neck stretched and the head held high in the air. The main reason for, or function of flehmen is intraspecific, or within-species communication. By transferring air containing pheromones and other scents to the vomeronasal organ (VNO), an olfactory-chemosensory organ located between the roof of the mouth and the palate, animals can gather chemical "messages". These scents tell an animal about other members of their species in some of the following ways: Identifying reproductive status; Reproductive synchrony; Post-parturition; Brazilian tapir (from the Tupi tapi'ira), lowland tapir or (in Portuguese) anta, Ceiba Tops Lodge, Amazon River, The Amazon,; Rio Amazonas, in South America is the largest river by discharge volume of water in the world and according to most authorities, the second longest in length - Wikipedia; Amazon River rainforest, Peru, South America, TapirB41651.CR2
