Maras Salt Mines, or Salinas or Las Salineras a special Inca site, featuring hand-built terraced pools in which salt water derived from the flow of a naturally salinated creek was evaporated in the sun, enabling them to harvest the salt. It is likely they predate the Incas by hundreds if not thousands of years. Approximately 3000 pools, salt evaporation pools or saldineros, form an intricate maze of water and paths that are still used at this ancient salt production site high in the Andes, salt evaporation pools, saldineros, sodium chloride, Andes Mountains; Peru, South America, Peru40089.CR2
