Comments: Gistok was a juvenile bornean orangutan sent to Tanjung Putting National Park to be rehabilitated back to the wild under the supervision of the National Park guards. When tourists would visit Pelindungan Hutan Dan Pelestarian Alam they would leave their boats and many belongings behind while they visited the forest. Gistok would go to the boats and rummage through the tourists belongings. He would also raid the park employees quarters if given the chance. All of this labeled him a problem orangutan and he was beaten for his misbehavior. Actually he was a wonderful orangutan and his behavior quite normal. Eventually the National Park built the enclosure in this photograph to house problem orangutans like Gistok. But the design was flawed and shortly after placing Gistok in the enclosure he spread the bars and walked out into the forest. Eventually one National Park guard lost it and murdered Gistok. A very sad and brutal end to a wonderful young orangutan. Please see image 5021 for an overview image.
