Caption: Leafy Sea Dragon (Phycodurus eques) Swimming. Found in the Kelp Forests in the shallow, temperate waters around southern and western Australia . Named for the long leaf-like protrusions, which serve only as camouflage, the leafy sea dragon is a marine fish that perfectly mimics a drifting strand of kelp. Leafy sea dragons grow to 18 inches (45 cm) in length. The leafy sea dragon is the official marine emblem of the state of South Australia. The Department of Fisheries in Western Australia declared it a totally protected species in 1991. The South Australian government allows one brooding male to be collected each year. The Leafy Sea Dragon is unusual in that the male broods the eggs and gives "birth". When the baby sea dragon leaves the safety of its father's tail, it receives no further parental care. The Leafy Sea Dragon has no scales, but is covered with jointed, armor-like plates.
