Female Australian Leaf-Tailed Gecko (Saltuarius wyberba) waves tail around in a distraction display. These geckos will deliberately shed their tails (caudal autotomy) in an effort to escape capture by predators. Endemic to the Stanthorpe area on the New South Wales/Queensland border in Australia. Formerly considered a regional color variation of the Southern Leaf-Tailed Gecko (Saltuarius swaini). The Leaf-Tailed Geckos of Australia ( Saltuarius & Phyllurus) are very similar in appearance and behavior to the distantly related Leaf-Tailed Geckos of Madagascar (Uroplatus), an example of convergent evolution.
