Caption: Lying just east of Lake Baikal is the beautiful Barguzin Valley, Siberia's Jackson Hole. The resemblance to Wyoming's famed landmark is striking, though the Barguzin Valley is four times longer than Jackson Hole and the vertical rise of the Barguzin Mountains is higher than that of the Tetons. It is an agricultural valley, with cattle, sheep, and wheat as principle items grazed or grown. Taking in the hay the old fashion way - with horse drawn hayrick.

Comments: I was privileged to be the first westerner, or non-Russian, to set foot in and photograph this part of Siberia. My first visit was in 1990 and I have returned many times since then. I have been working with U.S. and Russian environmental groups to preserve parts of this region, particularly the Barguzin Valley, as a national park or perhaps as an addition to the existing Zabaikalski National Park. Primary residents of the region are Buryat people, practicing Buddhists and descendants of the Mongols.
