Caption: Silverback mountain gorilla "Rugabo" in Virunga National Park, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (former Zaire). Tragically, Rugabo and three other members of his family were shot and killed in 1998 by Hutu extremists who had fled Rwanda after the civil war. Only about 600 mountain gorillas are left in the wild.

Black rhino, Diceros bicornis, one of the most endangered large mammals. Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania. Across the African continent rhinos, both black and white, are heavily poached for their horns making them one of the most endangered species. Currently, Black rhino population in Africa is estimated to be less than 3600. In 1900 it was estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands.
