Comments: This baby Bornean orangutan was orphaned when a farmer killed her mother with a machete because she was eating the farmers crops. The farmer stated he tried on multiple occasions to chase the mother and her baby orangutan out of his fields before killing her out of desperation to protect his food. The orangutans in this region (as is the case in many other areas), have lost their rainforest habitat to agricultural development. Orangutans that survive the initial conversion of the forest to agricultural fields are left with small islands of rainforest habitat in which to live. The small patches of rainforest can no longer support the food requirements of the orangutans who eventually wander into the agricultural fields for food. This baby orangutan, (named Suemike), lived in this crate for three weeks until Orangutan Foundation International was notified and confiscated the orangutan from the farmer. The farmer kept Suemike alive by feeding her bananas through the crate slats. After several years Suemike was released into a protected forest where she lived for several more years until she wandered into an agricultural field and was killed by a farmer.
