Comments: This Western Painted Turtle is sunning itself, extending its rear legs to maximize exposure to the warming rays. Turtles are most commonly seen sunning in the spring when the water is still cold. Trempealeau NWR is located along the Upper Mississippi River and embedded within the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.
