Available Comp Size: 700 x 458 Caption: African elephant with flaccid trunk paralysis. (Sequence 3 of 4)
Scientific name: Loxodonta africana Location: Fothergill Island, Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe Copyright: © Turco 1992 Photographer Code: 1086 AGPix ID: AGPix_MiPTu14_0402 Photo Alignment: 35mm (horizontal) Comments: Part of a 4 frame sequence showing the elephant using its foot to tare grass from the ground and then push it onto its trunk. Flaccid trunk paralysis or floppy trunk syndrome paralyzes the trunk starting at the tip. Over time paralysis worsens, extending up the trunk towards the head. Elephants with the condition eventually die of starvation. The cause of floppy trunk syndrome remains unknown, scientists suspect lead or Heliotropium ovalifolium, a plant.
