Comments: Here is seen a long track made by a sliding rock at The Racetrack, Death Valley, California. Although this playa & its rocks have been studied since the 1940s, no conclusive explanation has yet been made as to the mechanism of the rock movement. No one yet has actually witnessed a rock moving. A mud surface made slick by rain coupled with high winds are believed to play an important role. Rocks weighing a little as 1 pound & as much as 1,200+ pounds have been known to move. The longest track known was over one mile in length.
