Comments: Meerkats (Suricata suricatta) are about the size of a squirrel, although they're actually relatives of the mongoose. They stand about 10 to 12 inches tall. Meerkat is a South African Dutch word meaning 'lake cat' since meerkats are often found near stretches of water. They are highly social animals, banding together in family groups that may reach more than a dozen members. This meerkat is in the Namib desert of central Namibia.
