Comments: Soil was scoured off by glacier. Thin soil, even now only 2" deep, spring flooding and summer drought keep trees from growing. Globally rare. Found only on Baltic Sea islands and in the Great Lakes ecoregion. Pink seed heads are prairie smoke, Geum triflorum, endangered in NY state. The yellow flowers are balsam ragwort (Senecio pauperculus). Early May. Chaumont Barrens, NY. The Nature Conservancy
