Caption: Leopard Seal on ice floe
Scientific name: Hydrurga leptonyx
Location: Antarctic Peninsula
Copyright: © Cliff Beittel
Photographer Code: M-LESE-96
AGPix ID: AGPix_ClBe12_0287
Photo Alignment: 35mm (horizontal)
Comments: Averaging 11+ feet in length and 700+ lbs. in weight, Leopard Seals look like a cross between a moray eel and an anaconda. They are ferocious predators of penguins, fish, and other seals, but also eat krill. They occasionally stalk humans, and in 2003, a few months after this photo was made, a Leopard Seal killed an antarctic researcher who was doing underwater mapping.
