These pock-marks in the heavily-fortified (seven feet thick) brick walls of Fort Pulaski, Georgia resulted from a constant three-day bombardment by Union troops using prototype Rifled Cannons. As a result of the near total destruction of Fort Pulaski from these state-of-the-art weapons, no more brick (masonry) forts were ever constructed anywhere else in the world.

A Senior Fisheries Biologist with the North Carolina Division of Fish and Game (NC DF&G) displays a common carp (Cyprinus carpio) captured during an electro-fishing survey of the lower Roanoke River Basin in northeastern North Carolina. Throughout this multi-day, catch-and-release survey, DF&G fisheries biologists collected relevant population data (i.e., age, weight, length, sex, etc.) for each individual species caught and then gently returned each fish to its natural riverine habitat.
