After a summer of inactivity on land, polar bears make their way to the shoreline where they await the buildup of ice. This bear approaches water's edge on deep snow that has fallen recently. Not all polar bears are pure white, many are golden and more are the color of this one: ivory. Since the bear is not accompanied by cubs, it is probably a male.

Although the temperatures hover about zero degrees F., wildlife must still eat, and this energized wolf is after a fleeing Snowshoe Hare (that escaped). All wildlife that doesn't migrate from the bitterness of a northern winter or hibernate to sleep the season away, must be able to capture enough food and find suitable shelter from the worst of the weather. Wolves are well equipped to do just this. It embodies speed and energy.

Mountain Goats do not have large horns, nor do they taste good and have never been selected as trophy animals by big game hunters. For these reasons and also because they live in such inaccessible places, goat numbers remain fairly constant. They have no fear of heights and are often seen from below, as this one is, against the sky. They exist in the Rocky Mountains of the US West, the Cascades of the Northwest, B.C., Canda, Yukon and into coastal Alaska.

Still their numbers and range are larger and wider than one would think. Secretive and nocturnal, they are seldom seen.
