OVERVIEW Much of Johann Schumacher's photography takes place within a hundred mile radius of his home in Queens, New York. The rhythms of the seasons, habits of wild creatures and wild places are a specialty. Looks for colors, shapes, patterns and textures of the season. Uses light and special moments in time to bring a photo to life. Generalist. Images range from a bluet on Joe Pye weed to a snowy egret in full breeding display or the late light gilding the spartina of an autumnal salt marsh. Trained in art and design. One memorable image is a short-eared owl poised on a stalk of common mullein, silhouetted in the afterglow of a blood-red sunset. "The owl flew in silently," says Schumacher, "less than ten feet in front of me. I had just packed away my camera gear and missed the opportunity, but the image remains, indelibly etched in my memory.
