OVERVIEW Nature, wildlife, natural history and research fieldwork as well as backyard wildlife. Images from national wildlife refuges, national forests and private environmental organization preserves. Winter sports--crosscountry ski and sled dog. Abstracts from nature. NATURAL HISTORY Birds: Waterfowl, especially wood ducks; loons, including juveniles and research work; trumpeter swans in the ultralight migration project and a reintroduction project; owls; backyard bird portraits; bird banding; immature great blue herons; a fearless ruffed grouse, with and without people. Butterflies: More than 30 species, including skippers. Mammals: Marmots, pikas, Wyoming ground squirrels, mountain goats, short-tailed shrew. Amphibians: Tadpoles developing into frogs, bullfrogs and green frogs in a garden pond. Flora: Wildflowers in northeastern U.S., some from unusual habitats such as alvar grasslands and fens; some cultivars; Colorado wildflowers, alpine and subalpine; trees and shrubs. Scenics: Includes unusual ecosystems of fens, sand plains, sand dunes, alvar grasslands, calcareous pavement barrens, freshwater barrier beaches, eroded drumlins. Other: Growing collection of insects, spiders, crabs.
