Freshly Dug Ozette Potatoes on Woven Cloth from Andes Mountains Freshly Dug Ozette Potatoes on Woven Cloth from Andes Mountains The Ozette came from Peru by way of Spanish explorers to the Makah Indians at Neah Bay, Washington in the late 1700s. The Ozette is also known by the names Anna Cheekaâ??s Ozette and Makah Ozette. It is considered a fingerling potato, as its size ranges from 3-7 inches in length and 0.75-1.5 inches in diameter. The potato has an earthy and nutty flavor that is similar to the taste of cooked dry beans, with a firm flesh and very creamy texture. The Ozette is generally served steamed, fried, or roasted. Gerbera L., is a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It was named in honor of the German naturalist Traugott Gerber, a friend of Carolus Linnaeus...It has approximately 30 species in the wild, extending to South America, Africa, Madagascar, and tropical Asia. The first scientific description of a Gerbera was made by J.D. Hooker in Curtis Botanical Magazine in 1889 when he described Gerbera jamesonii, a South African species also known as Transvaal daisy or Barberton Daisy...Gerbera species bear a large capitulum with striking, 2-lipped ray florets in yellow, orange, white, pink or red colors. The capitulum, which has the appearance of a single flower, is actually composed of hundreds of individual flowers. The morphology of the flowers varies depending on their position in the capitulum...Gerbera is very popular and widely used as a decorative garden plant or as cut flowers. The domesticated cultivars are mostly a result of a cross between Gerbera jamesonii and another South African species Gerbera viridifolia. The cross is known as Gerbera hybrida. Thousands of cultivars exist. They vary greatly in shape and size. Colors include white, yellow, orange, red, and pink. The center of the flower is sometimes black. Often the same flower can have petals of several different colors...Gerbera is commercially important. Boat wake on Jenny Lake in Teton National Park, WY Located in northwestern Wyoming, Grand Teton National Park preserves a spectacular landscape rich with majestic mountains, pristine lakes and extraordinary wildlife. The abrupt vertical rise of the jagged Teton Range contrasts with the horizontal sage-covered valley and glacial lakes at their base, creating world-renowned scenery that attracts nearly four million visitors per year. Jackson Hole is the other distinctive geographic feature in the area. (Mountain men coined the term "hole" to describe enclosed mountain valleys such as Jackson's.) This flat valley offers a remarkable contrast to the rugged spires of the Teton Range. Consisting of porous, cobbled soils covered with sagebrush, Jackson Hole is an upland valley surrounded by mountains and highlands. It is one of the largest such valleys in the Rocky Mountains, being 8 to 12 miles wide and 40 miles long. Frozen Ice on Rose Bush Netting as Backdrop to Autumn Remnant Rose Leaves IMG_0051 This week, dripping water off the roof fell onto my perennial memory garden created for Jed-Boy Wonder last summer after his death, after he had guarded all of our living plants from the deer and forest wildlife with great energy and love, as only a devoted German Shepherd can do! The rosebushes formed an icicle palette of pattern, shining in morning sunlight to create a backdrop for the solitary leaves, still clinging to a delicate branch -- rather like my memories of Jeddy -- nostalgic and beautiful. Solitary Plant Label, Yellow Roses, Pokes Out From Potting Table Snow IMG_9237 My potting table sits close to the house and shares summertime lunches, evening dinners and morning potting with equal utility. I remember, right before the snow finding a potted house rose with a wilt. Fearing it would infect my other flowering plants, I ran it out the front door and set it on the table. This pain has caused the Battery-caged chickens to self-mutilate and die struggling in the cramped environment. While shoppers would prefer to pay less for an egg, they would probably never knowingly engage in cruelty towards the hen who lays the egg which creates their breakfast. The hen fed a vegetarian diet often lays eggs with higher nutrient value as well. This cruelty issue was raised at Harvard University in the 2007 - 2008 school year by a graduate Education student, AnnaLise S. Hoopes, who went on to mobilize student groups by simply providing information about the practices of raising caged chickens for producing eggs used in the dining halls of Harvard University. These students went on to share information with the University and in a heroic and compassionate move, Harvard University changed their eggs used in all dining halls on campus to hens who were cage-free, free-range animals, free from unnecessary suffering. This same student group under the leadership of Ms. Hoopes then organized themselves after the successful cage-free egg campaign and founded the Harvard University Vegetarian Society.
