Midway Atoll and Hummer-Butterfly Guide
My new book, Peterson Backyard Birding Guide: Hummingbirds and Butterflies, co-written with Bill Thompson III, is now available. I have personally autographed copies - email if you would like to order one for yourself, as a gift, or to mark a special occasion.
MIDWAY
My newest book, a guide to Midway Atoll, is at the printer and should be available in February 2012. I was working on this book at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge in March 2011 when the tsunami hit. I participated in and photographed bird rescue efforts by US Fish & Wildlife Service. Species include Laysan and black-footed albatross, Bonin petrel, and other nesting seabirds. My article and photos appear in the August 2011 National Wildlife magazine and on the NWF.org website. I will have a Midway article in the March 2012 issue of Bird Watcher's Digest.
While on Midway, I photographed Wisdom, the celebrated 60-year-old banded Laysan albatross much in the news recently.
Midway is a limited access area - very remote and expensive to visit. I hope to return in May 2012 for another book project. If so, I may be able to do photos and research for additional clients. Please email for details.
UPCOMING APPEARANCE: I will be speaking about attracting hummingbirds and butterflies to backyard habitats at the Montgomery County Parks, MD, on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2pm.

Alaska Highway Trip
Kay and her husband spent 3 1/2 weeks driving from MN to AK to experience the Alaska Highway. A sample of her photos can be viewed at www.agpix.com/platform/kayshaw1. A highlight of the trip was unusually clear views of Mt. McKinley for two days. She also found mutated plants of both regular and dwarf fireweed.
She will go to the Osa Peninsula and other areas in Costa Rica in February.

Recent coverage of remote Tuscany and Santorini, Greece
I recently finished my editing of a 30 day springtime shoot of what most Tuscans call the most remote part of the provence and about 10 days spent on the Greek isle of Santorini.
My goal in Tuscany was to find and photograph an area that was off the beaten path of tourism using mostly non traditional or overlooked subject matter. My base camp was a centuries old farmhouse that I shared alone with my wife with the nearest village, Montaione, about 10 miles away.
On Santorini, a very small island, this same goal was applied as well, although I found it much more difficult to find untouristed/unphotographed areas but I managed to find subject matter that is usually overlooked by most photographers.
In total, you'll find about 110 images posted here and the best keyword for both sites is Tuscany or Santorini, respectively. My camera for this trip was a Nikon D3X with several lenses including a tilt-shift lens, with two zoom lenses and two teleconverters, and a Gitzo carbon fiber tripod beneath an Acratech ball head.
